1. Mossy Oak Rambo

Looking for a survival knife that’s as capable of impressing your friends as it is useful in the great outdoors, all at a great price?
We recommend without hesitation the Rambo of Mossy Oak.

What we think of the Rambo of Mossy Oak

“Rambo” is the term used to designate a particular type of survival knife that evokes that used by the movie character who bears this name! This type of knife is a Bowie knife with a unique feature: the back of the blade is serrated over 2/3 of its length.

Because of this, what we like at first glance is its appearance: you will have an impressive knife in your hand. On the other hand, note that the notched part is just there for decoration and is not very effective.

The knife comes with a portable sharpener to constantly adjust the blade’s edge wherever you are. A fire starter is also provided. With this model, however, you will need some practice before starting a fire properly.

The knife, as well as these two accessories, can be stored in the nylon sheath provided. Due to the size of the blade, this sheath is not very practical to carry: the knife tends to bounce when walking quickly; it would have been better if the scabbard had a clip to wrap around the thigh for better comfort.

The plastic handle is covered with rubber for better handling. In addition, this coating is non-slip, which is very useful in wet conditions.

We also appreciate the price of this model: you will rarely find such a knife at this price.

The back of the blade is black anodized, giving it extra protection.

Finally, note that the fineness of the tip also makes it possible to accomplish tasks that require more precision.

2. Smith & Wesson SW7

Are you looking for a weapon that can give you the advantage in the event of a conflict, and that is a knife? The Smith & Wesson SW7 is a tanto-style survival knife, and it will turn you into a true predato.

Smith & Wesson SW7 video demonstration

What we think of the Smith & Wesson SW7

This Smith & Wesson SW7 knife is a “tanto,” which means that it can serve you for multiple purposes, but it is, above all, a weapon, whether for defense or attack.

If this is the use for which you intend it, this implies that you must know how to fight with a knife or else wish to learn how to develop these techniques.

The Smith & Wesson SW7 offers excellent maneuverability thanks to its ergonomic handle. It handles like a dagger and is ideal if you want the flexibility of a dagger but without the drawbacks of a double blade.

The steel pommel has a hole. It is useful when used as a hammer (for driving in a tent peg, for example).

The strong point of this knife is its ability to pierce. So, this model is ideal for all situations where you will need a moment. In addition, thanks to its robustness, you can be sure that the blade will not break.

An excellent choice for military or security training, the Smith & Wesson SW7 is a perfect complement to a firearm. In addition, this knife will very convincingly fulfill the tasks of other survival knives.

Finally, the knife comes with a hard plastic sheath. The weapon “clips” into the sheath so it does not come out unexpectedly when stowed.

This sheath is perfectly adaptable for left- and right-handed users: you can unscrew the upper part and adapt it to suit your dominant hand. That’s a great idea!

  • Design: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Price: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars

The Smith & Wesson SW7 is not a tool but a weapon intended for hunting or combat in conflict situations. It does not prevent it from fulfilling all the tasks that can be asked of a survival knife. The price of this knife remains correct when considering all its qualities.

3. Workpro Hatchet and Machete set

Using a multi-purpose knife may require learning specific techniques to perform all tasks best. Do you prefer to rely on tools with more precise functions and, therefore, easier to use? With this set offered by Workpro, you will have two separate tools!

Video demonstration of the Workpro hatchet and machete set

What we think of the Workpro hatchet and machete set

The Workpro brand offers this set consisting of a hatchet and a machete, which presents itself as an original alternative to a versatile survival knife.

The machete will be handy for you to cut anything, be it embarrassing vegetation, ropes, etc. It will be a tool you will keep close at hand while you walk.

On the other hand, the hatchet will come in very handy when it comes time to set up camp, chop wood, etc.

A significant advantage: generally, cutting wood with a survival knife is a task that requires a specific technique and that imposes a lot of shocks on the knife. Even if the suitable knives complete this task correctly, having a dedicated tool is very valuable.

It might be tempting to get this bundle to use the hatchet as a throwing weapon, a fashionable discipline! Note, however, that this is not recommended: the object is not designed for this function and may deteriorate quickly if you make such use of it.

The hatchet is light, very handy and practical. Its blade is relatively thin, making it unsuitable for cutting large pieces of wood. However, let’s not forget that the goal is wilderness survival. You will undoubtedly find use on your land, but to cut large pieces of wood regularly in your home, it is better to get a real ax.

The blade of each element is protected by a solid case with a practical and robust velcro clasp. Both pieces are provided well-sharpened, although they can be sharper.

The elegant handle of each element is in fully polished black wood. It offers a good grip. The raised part of the handle includes a non-slip groove to prevent slipping and injury during use.

Each blade has its nylon sheath attached to the belt. The machete handle is secured in the sheath by two Velcro straps. Since the hatchet is mainly used for camping, it may be more suitable to store it in a backpack to be less cluttered.

The machete is very handy for performing any other task that a standard survival knife allows.

Summary of features of the Workpro hatchet and machete set

  • Bench press equipment is included
  • Dimensions of the hatchet:
    • Total length: 25.4 cm / 10 inches
    • Weight: 360g / 12.7oz
  • Dimensions of the machete:
    • Total length: 33 cm / 13 inches
    • Weight: 330g / 11.6oz
  • Sleeve color: black

Advantages and disadvantages of the Workpro hatchet and machete set

Pros

  • Really handy for cutting branches
  • Full tang blades
  • Complementarity of two elements

Cons

  • More bulky than a simple knife

Our verdict on the Workpro hatchet and machete set

  • Quality: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Efficiency: 3.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Design: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Price: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars

Interestingly, this set is very recommendable if you want complementary tools on you that cover all survival tasks, rather than risk ruining your only knife. We may regret the lack of power of the hatchet, but the fair price of this set will undoubtedly convince you.

4. Mossy Oak hunting knife set

Are you a hunter looking for knives that can meet all your needs without breaking the bank? With this set from Mossy Oak, you will get two complementary knives for an attractive price!

What We Think About the Mossy Oak Hunting Knife Set

This Mossy Oak set includes a knife with a point and a straight blade and a knife with a curved blade, with an integrated hook in the back of the blade.

The knives are delivered with sheaths close by press stud with two velcro strips to hold the handle when the knife is not in use.

On the visual side, this set is strong. Both knives feature sleek black blades, and the handles are covered in an all-over camouflage pattern that’s perfect for the forest.

We like that for a small price you don’t get one knife, but two!

We regret that the sleeves are not non-slip or round; the straight edges can be awkward for the hands.

The hook is very effective for skinning but can also be helpful for other tasks.

Both knives include a handy hole in the corner of the handle for passing a cord.

The sheaths are delivered in two versions: press stud or Velcro strap.

Although they can be used for survival tasks, these two knives are for hunting jobs.

The straight-edged knife is in itself a complete and adequate survival knife. It can be used for all survival tasks, such as cutting branches. The tapered appearance of its tip is also beneficial. In addition, it can be used for attack and can be thrown.

To carve up your prey, these two knives are all you need. The tip of the knife with a straight edge can be handy.

5. Mossy Oak hunting knife set

Are you looking for a versatile and sturdy survival knife? With the Bowie from Mossy Oak, you’ll have a knife you can rely on.

Mossy Oak Bowie Knife Video Demonstration

What we think of Mossy Oak’s Bowie Knife

Bowie knives are classic survival knives, and they are recognized for their large size and a back with a curved and sharp end. With this model, Mossy Oak offers its version of the Bowie for an attractive price.

The knife comes with an elegant genuine leather sheath. The knife remains attached by two straps which close with press studs.

The blade is stainless steel, so there is no problem with rain or humidity. Brass fasteners are found in the handle, a material that is also found in the pommel as well as in the guard.

The entire tang blade, the wooden handle, is elegant, offers a good grip, and is non-slip.

The Mossy Oak Bowie offers good durability and will handle any survival task. You will appreciate its incredible versatility. Plus, it stays sharp for a long time.

The base of the blade includes a notch for the index finger. This notch is a little small but is very useful when using the lower part of the knife, especially for sharpening branches.

On the other hand, we regret a lack of quality monitoring in production. You may end up with a knife with minor adjustment flaws, especially in the rivets or the tang that may protrude a little, making it uncomfortable to handle.

It isn’t perfect because the price is lovely for a knife of this quality.

Summary of Mossy Oak Bowie Knife Features

  • Total length: 35.5 cm / 14 inches
  • Blade length: 21.5 cm / 8-1/2 inches
  • Blade Thickness: 3.7mm; 1-9/20 inches
  • Weight: 400g / 14oz

Pros and Cons of Mossy Oak Bowie Knife

  • Efficiency: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Design: 3.0 out of 5.0 stars

It’s hard to find fault with this Bowie from Mossy Oak. It’s a shame that the finish, in terms of fitting the elements, is not always up to par. But if you skip it or get an item free from manufacturing defects, you’ll have a durable and practical survival knife that will meet all your needs and for an unbeatable price.

6. Schrade Frontier SCHF36

Are you looking for a sturdy, highly effective, and not necessarily extensive knife? Hard to find a better choice than the Schrade Frontier SCHF36!

Video demonstration of the Schrade Frontier SCHF36

What we think of the Schrade Frontier SCHF36

Schrade is a well-known brand of knives. SCHF36 is often described as a “beast.” It is indeed a heavy and sturdy knife.

The blade, in particular, is powerful; this is also the case for this model as a whole. You can use it to cut wood with surprising ease, and it is a knife that resists everything!

The handle is manageable, and the location for the index finger in the blade works well but is not very useful. You will be able to perform all survival tasks efficiently with this model. Despite its robustness, it is also effective in tasks requiring precision.

The knife sheath closes on the handle with a push-button. The strap of this clasp is adjustable. The inside of the sheath is plastic, and a velcro fastener allows you to attach the sheath to your belt.

The Schrade Frontier SCHF36 comes with two accessories that work very well. The first is an outstanding quality sharpener that will allow you to keep your knife perfectly sharp. The second is a very efficient fire starter: you will be able to light fires in the middle of nature in no time.

The accessories stored on the sheath’s top are a small pocket with velcro closure. Practice!

The main flaw of the Schrade Frontier SCHF36 lies in its handle. Indeed, if it is generally comfortable, the bump at the bottom of the handle hinders the grip. Above all, the notched part on the bottom of the handle can be very annoying, even painful in the most strenuous work. You may have to sand it down for comfort.

Schrade Frontier SCHF36 Feature Summary

  • Fire starter and sharpener included
  • Total length: 26.7 cm / 10.5 inches
  • Blade length 12.8 cm / 5 inches
  • Blade thickness 9.1 cm / 3.6 inch
  • Blade Material: 1095 High Carbon Steel
  • Weight: 367.4g / 13oz
  • Handle color: black

Advantages and disadvantages of the Schrade Frontier SCHF36

Pros

  • Robustness
  • Versatility
  • Suitable for tough jobs
  • Accessories

Cons

  • Notch for the finger on the blade a little small

Our verdict on the Schrade Frontier SCHF36

  • Quality: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Efficiency: 5.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Design: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars
  • Price: 4.0 out of 5.0 stars

The Schrade Frontier SCHF36 is full of qualities. Despite the slight discomfort that we can blame the handle for specific tasks, it is an exceptional knife that will fulfill its role perfectly, whatever the task you intend for. It’s not the most affordable of knives, but its quality more than justifies its price.

7. 2 Mossy Oak Bowie knives

One knife is good; two knives are better! With this set, Mossy Oak offers you two knives that will be very useful for an attractive price.

Mossy Oak Bowie Knife Set 2 Video Demonstration

What we think of Mossy Oak Bowie 2-Piece Knife Set

These two knives are based on the “Bowie” style but in a much smaller format. It does not make them useless; quite the contrary!

Having two knives is very practical to devote them to different uses. In addition, alternating the two makes it possible to reduce the use of the blade for each one. Finally, it can be interesting to have a knife in two strategic places (one on oneself and one as a backup).

These knives are handy for anglers and hunters.

Their strong point is their excellent maneuverability compared to larger models.

Each knife is supplied with a resistant and practical sheath.

Each sleeve is made of elegant stacked leather. The guard and the pommel prevent the knife from slipping, and the relief of the handle allows a good grip.

You’ll be pleasantly surprised to find that the blade is sharp – be careful, by the way! If you use it a lot for somewhat rough work, it may wear out quite quickly and need re-sharpening. Otherwise, it will stay sharp for a while.

The blade is robust, and its back is quite wide. Both knives are well-balanced and easy to handle, and they will allow you to accomplish most of the tasks expected of a survival knife.

On the other hand, they are not designed for demanding tasks (like cutting logs, for example). They are more suitable for work requiring precision. You will find them particularly useful for small camp tasks (cutting ropes, etc.).

The smaller ones, in particular, is perfect for butchering and scaling fish, mainly thanks to their size.

Things to know before buying a survival knife

I have a Swiss army knife; what can I use a survival knife for?

A fixed blade survival knife can quickly become indispensable when camping or hiking. It can be used to slice through overgrown vegetation and branches, dig up the soil, make other tools, and more. It is also a providential weapon to defend against dangerous animals when in the middle of nature.

Most survival knives also allow you to fire anywhere (provided you have a fire starter accessory), and some models have other practical functions.

Do I need a survival knife for hunting?

A good knife is essential for a hunter, especially for cutting up prey. Some knives are also mainly specialized in facilitating this specific task.

Our selection criteria for buying a survival knife

The number of items

While most survival knives are supplied individually, some are sold as a set (two knives, an axe, etc.). It’s up to you to see if you prefer to favor versatility or lightness.

The material of the handle

Survival knife handles can be made of different materials, each with advantages and disadvantages. There are three main categories:

The wooden handles have a good grip as well as a beautiful appearance. Most are treated, but they are still more sensitive to water, damaging them.

Polymer handles of the TPE type are less expensive and more resistant. However, they can be slippery when wet if they are not textured.

Rubber handles provide a good grip, even when wet. On the other hand, they will be damaged more efficiently during the most demanding tasks.

The blade material

There is a wide variety of types regarding the blade, of more or less good quality, and it can be challenging to navigate. Note, however, that there are two prominent families:

  • Stainless steel. It will ensure your knife has a long life and complete protection against weather and rust. On the other hand, it will be more difficult to sharpen and tend to have a less sharp edge.
  • High carbon steel. If this steel is not stainless, it has other qualities. Thus, it is easier to sharpen and keeps its sharpness much longer. However, this steel is more sensitive to corrosion and requires more maintenance. It is recommended to wipe it well after each use. Applying oil to the blade can prevent oxidation.

The silk

The tang of a knife is the length of the blade that extends into the handle. A full tang knife, also called “full tang,” will be more substantial.

There are several variants, but generally, the name full tang is reserved for models where the tang is not covered and is visible along with the knife.

The scabbard

Most survival knives come with a sheath. The quality and design are important because using your knife quickly and storing it correctly is a determining practical matter.
